Description

Chapel Farm House is a farmhouse dating from the early 16th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of brick, with some exposed timber framing on the east side, and features tiled roofs. It has an L-shaped plan, with a 19th-century wing that projects forward to the south of the east end. This includes a 16th-century wing to the north and a 17th-century wing running east to west, with the early 16th-century wing partly overbuilt to the east. The entire structure was re-fronted in the 18th century, and there are some small 20th-century extensions to the north.

The house is two storeys high, with a brick band at the first floor level. It has a large panelled chimney on the east flank and another chimney on the ridge of the north wing. On the south elevation, to the right, there is a hipped projecting wing with a tripartite sash window. To the left, there are four tripartite sash windows, except for the third from the left, which is a single window above a six-panelled door. This door is topped with a four-pane rectangular fanlight and is set beneath a Doric porch supported by two columns, two pilasters, and an entablature.

Inside, the northern bay features three bays of timber framing, with chamfered and stopped joists in the northern bay. The main ground floor rooms have been remodelled, with a plaster cornice in the southwest room and large moulded beams in the eastern room, which also has cavetto and double ovolo moulding. One of these beams has mortices for a diamond mullioned window.
