Description

The Church of St Andrew is a parish church located in Brettenham. It dates back to the 14th century but was rebuilt in 1852 by architect S.S. Teulon. The church is constructed of flint with stone quoins and features a tiled roof. It has an aisless nave, paired transeptal chapels, and a chancel. The west tower, which is three stages high and has a flushwork parapet, is largely from the 14th century. All the windows throughout the church are in the Decorated style from 1852, with a continuous string course located beneath them. The chancel's east window features paired intersecting ogees, while the north transept has a spherical triangle. There is an octagonal vestry with a steep tiled roof and an ogeed priest's door leading into the south chancel, which is topped with a finial. The south doorway, dating from the 12th century, has single order shafts with chevron and irontwist designs, volute capitals beneath squared imposts, and a double zig-zag arch. The interior is whitewashed, and the nave roof has arched braces that support the principals with collars, along with a ridge piece and purlins, showcasing conspicuous ashlaring. The roofs of the transept and chancel are similar, with the chancel featuring foiled braces and moulded purlins. The timber roof over the crossing has excellent triradial articulation, reminiscent of the design at Ball at Shadwell Court. Inside, there is a fine timber reredos with an altarpiece depicting the Adoration, an alabaster and timber altar railing, and wrought iron parclose screens to the tower and transepts. The church contains stained glass in all its windows, largely created by Ward and Dixon, with the east window designed by Gibbs.
