Description

This is a detached cottage dating back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 17th century and external walls constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries. The walls are built with a distinctive Flemish-bond brick pattern, incorporating some chalk, and the roof is thatched with brick stacks, half-hipped in style. The cottage is a 2½-bay cruck building; the half-bay represents the remains of an open hall, with a floor inserted during the 17th century. It is a single-storey dwelling with an attic, featuring two windows on the front. The central entrance is a planked door located within a 20th-century porch; a two-light casement window is positioned on either side of the door. A three-light casement window is found in the attic. A window is visible on the left return to both the ground and first floors. The right return is a combination of chalk and brickwork with light timber framing to the attic gable and a planked door leading to the attic. The rear elevation features bands of chalk and brick, with a planked door positioned to the right and a two-light fixed window to the left.

The interior is reported to contain a chamfered beam with run-out stops to the inserted 17th-century ceiling within the original open hall. There are also 17th-century six-panelled doors with cockspur hinges on the ground floor, and butterfly hinges on the first floor. The roof timbers above the hall are blackened by smoke. Three cruck trusses are present to the east, one featuring an arch-braced collar and curved wind braces to the purlins; these were recorded by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (RCHM). A portion of the cruck structure is visible on the external left return wall.
