Description
The Packhorse Bridge over the River Ebble is a medieval footbridge that was widened in the 19th century. It is constructed of dressed stone, with the widening done in brick. The bridge features a small, narrow three-span design with depressed two-centred arches, which have double-chamfered arch-rings and weathered buttresses on the downstream (east) side. In the 19th century, the bridge was expanded to approximately 6 feet wide on the upstream (west) side, maintaining the depressed two-centred arches. There are no parapets, but modern wooden railings have been added. The bridge spans the River Ebble, a tributary of the River Avon. It is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
