Description
The Church of St. Martin is an Anglican parish church located in Ebbesbourne Wake, dating from the 13th, 15th, and 17th centuries. It features a combination of flint and limestone chequers with a tiled roof that has coped verges. The church consists of a nave and chancel under a single roof, with a bellcote situated above the west door.
The exterior includes a chamfered plinth and a hollow-chamfered west doorway with stops, leading to double planked doors. Above the doorway is a 16th-century, 2-light square-headed window with cusped lights. On the south side, there is a 17th-century, 3-light recessed hollow-chamfered mullioned window, and to the right, a blocked Tudor-arched chamfered priest's door. The east end features a 15th-century pointed Perpendicular window with two cusped lights, a hoodmould with carved head terminals, and a cross finial. The north side has a small lancet window. The west bellcote is timbered and tile-hung, topped with a square pyramidal roof, likely from the late 19th century.
Inside, the church has a stone and herringbone wood floor, and a three-bay braced collar-rafter roof supported by two tie-beam trusses with struts to the principals. A notable feature is the fine 12th-century cylindrical stone font located at the west end, which has a moulded base and a scalloped bowl, accompanied by an oak cover, probably from the 17th century. This very small, unaltered church is set in a picturesque location within the fields of a diminished village site.
