Description
Mount Sorrel Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the late 16th century, 19th century, and 20th century. The building is constructed of painted rubble stone and features a half-hipped thatched roof with brick stacks. It has a gable end facing the road and consists of two bays. The cottage is single-storey with an attic and has one window. A 20th-century door is located in a 20th-century extension to the left, along with a single-light window and two 2-light casements, one of which is in a blocked doorway to the right. The attic includes one 2-light casement.
On the right side, there are 2-light and 3-light casements flanking a curved projecting bread oven. The left side features a 20th-century flat-roofed extension and two 20th-century dormers. At the rear, there is a 20th-century kitchen extension. Inside, the cottage retains a central arch-braced open cruck truss with chamfered soffits, and full crucks resting on stone pads. There is a second cruck truss at the south gable end that is only partly visible. An inserted floor, likely from the 16th century, has deeply chamfered beams with stepped stops that run parallel to the roof trusses, including the south gable end. An inserted stack of similar age on the north side of the open truss features an open fireplace with a cambered lintel set on stone jambs. It is likely that the house originally extended to the north, as the two bays would otherwise be surprisingly small for a structure with such a fine open roof truss.
