Description
Ford Mead Cottage is a detached house dating from the late 15th century, originally of open-hall design, with alterations made in the 16th and early 17th centuries. The cottage features rubble stone walls and a thatched roof, with one brick stack located to the left of the door and another at the right end. It has two storeys, although it was originally designed as a single storey with an attic. The structure may have originally been a long house, with the byre at the left end rebuilt as a kitchen.
A 20th-century open timber porch with a gabled tiled roof leads to a 20th-century ledged door. On the ground floor, to the left of the door, there is a three-light stone mullioned window with a hoodmould, and two similar windows to the right of the door. The first floor has three similar windows without hoodmoulds, all featuring inserted timber casements. The front wall was rebuilt and raised in the 17th century.
Inside, the hall contains a large open fireplace with stone jambs and a timber lintel, along with the remains of a bread oven. Cruck posts are visible in the rear wall. The inserted floor has been partially renewed in the 20th century but retains one stop-chamfered ceiling beam. The chamber above the hall features one true cruck and two jointed cruck trusses, one of which was altered when the front wall was raised. This chamber also has a fireplace with stone jambs and a timber lintel. The roof over the kitchen has been renewed, and there is a 20th-century single-storey addition at the rear.
