Description

The Court is a country house built in the mid-18th century, with extensions added to each end likely in the early 19th century. It features brick walls and a low-pitched hipped slate roof with a dentil cornice, and has one plastered and one brick chimney stack in the center. The house has two storeys, an attic, and a basement.

The main (north) front showcases a six-panel raised panelled door with a semi-circular ornamental fanlight, accessed by a flight of moulded stone steps. The door is framed by a classical surround with Tuscan columns that support an open pediment adorned with modillion blocks. To the left of the door, there are two stone mullioned basement windows. A stone band course runs at ground floor level, with a raised band course beneath the first floor windows. The ends of the central block are accentuated with raised brick quoins.

On the ground floor, there are four sash windows with glazing bars set under gauged brick arches, while the first floor has five similar, shorter windows. The attic features three flat-roofed dormers with casement windows that have lead lights. The flanking blocks on either side have moulded string courses at the first floor level, each containing one sash window with glazing bars. The right block includes a door with a fanlight on the ground floor, and there is a lean-to extension to the right of this block.

The rear elevation displays several stone mullioned windows of the flat mullion type. Inside, the dining room is notable for its moulded plaster ceiling and modillion cornice, with pedimented over-doors. The fireplace surround is flanked by Tuscan columns that support an entablature, and the overmantel features a mirror with an eased architrave, flanked by Tuscan columns supporting a broken curved pediment. Shallow recesses on either side of the chimney breast are framed by Tuscan columns supporting an entablature with a pulvinated frieze, and segmental moulded arches lead to the recesses, complete with projecting keystones. The entrance hall also has a modillion cornice, flat over-doors with modillion cornices, and a cut string staircase with spandril brackets, turned balusters, and a wreathed handrail. The current kitchen includes semi-circular recesses on either side of the fireplace, featuring moulded arches, and there is a 18th-century fireplace surround in one of the first-floor rooms.
