Description

A pair of cottages located on the south side of The Borough in Downton, built in the 17th century and rebuilt in the 18th century. The cottages are constructed of Flemish bond brick with a thatched roof. They are two storeys high and have a four-window frontage. Number 90 has a central planked door, while number 92 has a 20th-century door to the left of centre. Number 90 features two 20th-century casement windows, and number 92 has one 2-light and one 3-light casement window. A two-brick plat band runs along the first floor. The windows on the first floor consist of four 2-light casements and one 1-light casement. A large axial brick stack, dating back to the 17th century, is prominent on the exterior. Number 90 has a 20th-century rear extension, and number 92 has a 2-light leaded casement window to the attic at the rear, along with a flat-roofed 20th-century extension. The interior of number 90 retains the original layout, including a winding staircase in the southwest corner, a chamfered beam with ogee stops supported by a chamfered post at the west end. Number 92 features a chamfered beam with step and run-out stops. The cottages were likely originally timber-framed and rebuilt in brick during the 18th century.
