Description
Borough Cross is a 14th-century structure located in front of No 62 (The Goat) on The Borough in Downton. It has undergone restorations in 1787, 1897, and 1953. The cross is made of limestone and features three worn hexagonal steps leading up to a square plinth with chamfered corners. An octagonal shaft supports a small cross. There is a Latin inscription on the riser of the middle step, along with inscription tablets on the bottom step that commemorate the restorations; the 1897 repair was funded by Helen, Countess of Radnor, and the 1953 restoration was to celebrate the Coronation. Downton received borough status and a market charter from Peter des Roches, bishop of Winchester, around 1205. This cross is very similar to another located in the churchyard, which is also listed as an Ancient Monument in Wiltshire.
