Description

Downton Church of England Primary School is a board school built in 1895. It features Flemish bond brick with limestone dressings, a tiled roof, and brick stacks, arranged in an E-plan. The building is single storey with ten windows. A projecting gable to the left of the center has an elliptical-arched doorway and a 2-light mullioned window above. To the left, there is a 3-light mullioned and transomed window in a Tudor-arched opening, topped with a traceried panel that displays the date 1895. Flanking this are groups of sash windows with pivot openings, each group topped with a hipped gablet. To the right, another projecting gable features groups of sashes with stone mullions and transoms. The building has a stepped eaves course and saddleback coping on the gables. The roof includes lead and cast-iron cylindrical vents with conical cappings, and the brick stacks are adorned with decorative pots.

Above the front door, there is an octagonal limestone belfry with traceried and chamfered openings, topped by an ogee roof and weathervane. The left and right returns have similar groups of sashes with stone mullions and transoms on the left return. At the rear, three gabled wings contain groups of tall sashes and pivot windows, all featuring cambered flat arches and keystones, with loop vents above. Covered yards between the wings have corrugated-iron arched roofs supported by cast-iron piers.

Inside, the school has planked doors and glazed sliding partitions between larger rooms, with partly exposed roof timbers resting on stone corbels. This building is a well-preserved example of a Board School, established following the Elementary Education Act of 1870.
