Description
22 Cross Hayes is a former teacher's house that has been converted into offices. It was built in 1851 and 1857 and features limestone ashlar with alternating grey sandstone and limestone dressings, cross axial stacks, and a slate hipped roof. The building is designed in a polychromatic Artisan Mannerist style and has a double-depth plan.
The exterior is two storeys high with a cellar and has a five-window range. The symmetrical front displays alternate-coloured quoins that create pilaster strips at the corners, topped with a deep modillion cornice. The segmental-arched outer doorways and window surrounds also feature similar dressings, including moulded keys and hood moulds. The doorways have console canopies and are set below 4-pane overlights with cartouches above that carry the dates, along with 8-panel doors. The windows have shallow cill blocks and 8/8-pane horned sashes with a central mullion bar. The right-hand return is made of coursed rubble.
Although the interior has not been inspected, the building is noted for its fine craftsmanship and is recognized for its significant contribution to the group of listed buildings in the area. Historically, it was built as the Headmaster's House for the Church of England School established in 1857 and later served as Municipal Offices.
