Description
St Aldhelm's Presbytery is a former stable that has been incorporated into the presbytery. It dates from the early 19th century and was extended in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed, squared limestone with a rear extension made of coursed limestone rubble, topped with a stone slate roof. It is a single-depth stable with a rear extension and is a single storey high, featuring a windowless front facing the street.
The street elevation includes two round-arched recesses connected by imposts, which balance the matching screen wall on the south side of Cross Hayes House. The right-hand side has a 6/6-pane sash window in an exposed box, while the rendered left-hand side features a fragment of a medallion from the Abbey and 20th-century casement windows. The rear extension, made of coursed rubble, has a central doorway within a single-storey porch, a two-storey outshut to the left, and a taller second floor behind the porch, which includes horned sash windows. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this building served as the stable block for Cross Hayes House, and the Catholic Church was built in 1876.
