Description

Number 32 and the attached rear store is a town house dating from the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed of squared, coursed limestone rubble, with a partly brick rear range, brick stacks on the left-hand and rear gables, and a stone slate roof. The building exhibits a mid-Georgian style with a single-depth parallel plan and a rear east wing.

The exterior features two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a symmetrical front that has five windows. The central section is set forward and includes an ashlar pediment, a doorcase with a raised surround and bracketed pediment, and double six-panel doors with top glazed panels. The ground floor has late 19th-century horned plate-glass sashes, while the first floor has 18th-century six-over-six pane sashes in exposed, slightly recessed boxes, along with two casement dormers. The basement has wide mullion openings with simple dressings and relieving arches. The rear wing is brick with a gabled dormer and a two-storey parapeted section in the re-entrant.

Inside, the central hall features an open-well stair with late 18th-century Chinese fret balusters, a ramped moulded rail, and carved brackets. The rear left-hand room has a moulded cornice, a ceiling beam, two-panel doors, and a flagged basement with elliptical-arched recesses in the right-hand section and round arches in the east range, one providing access to a well. A large rear chimney breast is also present, along with a segmental-arched vault extending forward of the right-hand basement. The attached store at the rear has a timber lintel above a wide central entrance and contains former fireplaces inside.
