6/39 The Lansdowne Monument

Obelisk, 1845 by Sir Charles Barry for 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne in memory of Sir William Petty (1623-87), statistician and economist, ancestor of the Petty-Fitzmaurice family. Rubble stone with ashlar dressings, monumental scale. Three high steps, mostly collapsed, plinth, pedestal and main shaft with moulded base splayed in from pedestal. 125' over-all, erected at a cost of ?1,359. No inscription. A landmark for miles around.
