Description

Four monuments are located in the churchyard to the south of the south aisle of the Church of St James. These four chest tombs date from the 18th to early 19th centuries and are made of ashlar stone.

From west to east, the first is the Pottow monument, dating from the late 18th century. It features a raised fielded centre plaque on each side, flanked by fielded strips, with baluster angles and a moulded base and cornice that includes a pulvinated frieze. The south side has an inscription for H. Pottow, who died in 1788.

The second is the K. Pottow monument, from the early 19th century. This tomb has a hexagonal plaque with concave-curved sides set on a horizontally-fluted base. It includes flanking niches with draped urns on the north side and cherub heads with drapery on the south. The end angle piers are adorned with carved classical trophies, and the north side bears an inscription for Kezia Pottow, who died in 1826.

The third monument is unidentified and dates from the early 19th century. It features a fluted frieze, slab sides with low relief plaques, and floral ornamentation in between. The angle piers have anthemion and husk ornamentation, and there are oval end plaques with plant sprays.

The fourth monument is also unidentified and from the early 19th century. It has a plinth, base, cornice, and a stepped ridged top, with baluster angles and sunk side plaques that feature a scroll motif in the center.
