Description
Wheelwrights is a cottage dating from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of greensand faced with diaper brickwork, featuring raised limestone quoins and greensand sills. The building has a thatched roof and stands two storeys high with a cellar. It has three bays, including a narrow stair hall bay in the center, a kitchen to the right, and a parlour to the left. There is a two-storey 20th-century extension at the rear.
The central entrance features an early 19th-century six-panelled door with a wide moulded stone frame and a flat canopy supported by cut brackets. A plat band runs along the building. The original two-light paned casement windows on the ground floor have been replaced with a three-light casement in the 19th century. The roof is half-hipped to the left and has a gable stack to the right. The original brick rear wing on the right has been converted into a 20th-century extension.
Inside, the parlour on the left has an angle fireplace on the rear wall, a chamfered spine beam with ogee stops, and an early 19th-century fluted fireplace that has been reset from the kitchen end. The kitchen features an open brick fireplace with a timber lintel. The roof consists of three bays with cambered collars and a single tier of butt purlins.
