Description

Friars Cottage is a late 16th or early 17th century cottage located on Urchfont High Street. The building is timber-framed and brick, set on greensand sills, and has a thatched roof. It is two storeys high with a basement and attics. The front of the cottage, presenting two bays to the street, is characterised by square framing, two panels high, supported by a heavy bressumer. The upper panels feature close studding with straight corner braces. A garage has been inserted into the basement, with stonework rising to form a stack gable. A six-panelled door is situated against the central wall of the bay closest to the road. The cottage also includes a small canted bay window and three-light timber windows. An 18th century rebuilding of the gable incorporated a second gable stack and windows with segmental arched heads; the window frames have been replaced. A single recessed dormer is present on the south side. Inside, plasterwork on the upper floor bears the date 1633.
