Description

The Congregational Chapel, dating from 1662, is constructed of rubble stone with a stone-tiled roof and moulded coping to the gables, featuring flush quoins. The south front has an eyebrow dormer above a five-light stone lunette inscribed with the biblical quotation 'Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of thy God Ec 5. 1.' in raised letters. Centrally, a double door is set within a flush, moulded surround. Flanking the doors are two recessed, ovolo-moulded windows, each with two lights, and a continuous hoodmould above. A stone sundial sits above the door. The north side has three similar windows, each with two lights, beneath a single hoodmould; the centre window has one light blocked, and a slightly off-centre two-light window sits under the eaves. The east end wall includes an upper two-light window with a hoodmould. The interior is outstanding and complete, featuring closely spaced panelled pews, galleries on three sides, and a high, panelled pulpit. The roof is plastered and bears a painted inscription of Psalm 92, verse 1, above the lunette.
