Description

This is a row of four red brick houses with stuccoed ground floors, dating from around 1820 and subsequently altered. They stand at numbers 7 to 10 on Northgate Street. The houses have low-pitched gable end slate roofs and block sill courses in stucco. Number 8 retains a plinth. The windows are recessed sashes; on the second floor, they are square with four panes wide. Number 7 has a modern shop front. Number 8 has a recessed door with two flush panels, a lower section of glazed panels, and a window with six panes and a block sill. Number 9 has a similar door, with a window that has modern glazing but retains the original frame of panelled pilasters and a panelled band. Number 10 has a modernised 19th-century double shop front with flanking pilasters and a shallow cornice. Numbers 1 to 18 (consecutively) and the listed buildings on the southwest side of Market Place are grouped together for their group value.
