Description

A row of four cottages built in the early 19th century, and subsequently altered. The cottages are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with blue headers. Number 85 has a rendered front, while the rear and right side return are of flint with brick quoins and bands. The front roof has Welsh slate, and the rear roof is tiled. Brick stacks are visible. Originally designed with a symmetrical appearance and a central passage leading through, the row is comprised of paired cottages on each side. The row originally featured five bays (each cottage one bay, with a central bay for the passage), with a sixth bay added at the right end. A board door provides access to the through-passage. Each cottage has a six-panel door located on the outer side, with the upper two panels of number 85's doors being glazed. The ground-floor windows are wide segmental arches, and the first-floor windows are smaller. Number 83 has an eight-pane side-sliding sash window. The window above has a four-pane sash. Number 85 has smaller, 20th-century small-pane windows, and an additional first-floor window above the through-passage. Number 87 features a three-light window dating from around 1900, with a twelve-pane side-sliding sash window above. Number 89 has a 24-pane side-sliding sash window, with a twelve-pane casement window above, and a two-light window on each floor in the added bay. A first-floor band runs along the top of the building. Ridge stacks are situated between pairs of cottages and at the right end.
