Description
Patford House is a house that was originally built in the early to mid-18th century and has since been altered in the early 19th century and mid-20th century. It is now used as an office. The building is constructed of stucco with limestone dressings, featuring ashlar gable stacks and a slate roof. It has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with an attic, displaying a three-to-one-to-three window arrangement. The double-fronted façade includes an ashlar plinth, a ground-floor cill band, quoins, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. Notable features include a fine pedimented doorcase with attached Tuscan columns, a six-panel door, and an overlight with pointed Gothic glazing bars and a lantern. The windows are horned plate-glass sashes in full-height three-light bows, and there are two hipped dormers.
Inside, the house retains a good early 18th-century interior. Key details include an entrance hall divided by a round-headed arch leading to a rear open-well staircase with a curtail, a column on vase balusters, a modillion cornice, and an oval plaster ceiling panel. There is a lateral corridor with a dado and a fine marble fire surround in the front left-hand room. The first-floor front room features raised and fielded panelling and a boxed-out cornice, along with a central front dressing room. The roof has an altered collar truss with wide boards. The design of Patford House is composed and matches with No.5, which was refronted to match, as well as the house to the south, all of which share a continuous cornice.
