Description

Castle House is a house built in 1770 in a Neo-classical style. The building was demolished behind its facade around 1970, and was designed by Robert Adam. Constructed of limestone ashlar, it features two ashlar ridge stacks and a slate hipped roof with a central conical section. The facade is symmetrical, with a plat band, a fluted frieze, a modillion cornice, and a blocking course. It has a nine-window range, with six-over-six sash windows. The central section projects slightly, housing a shallow three-window bow, and contains a central door with an eared architrave and a floating cornice. A lead rainwater downpipe is located on the left re-entrant angle. The interior was completely rebuilt. Castle House was built onto a mid-17th century house that faced the road; a fine fire surround and some panelling from the earlier building were transferred to No.3 Market Hill.
