Description

Waverley House is a house, now used as offices, dating from 1754, with alterations made in the late 19th century and a restoration in the late 20th century. It is constructed of ashlar and coursed squared stone, painted, with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The roof features two renewed brick gable stacks and a single coped gable. The building has a plinth, a band at first-floor level, and a sill band, with chamfered quoins. An important feature is the modillion main cornice. The house is three storeys high and has a five-window front. The main windows are 12-pane sashes with eared architraves, cornices, and aprons. A central sash features volutes, a pseudo-balustrade, and a dated curly, dentillated pediment marking the year 1754. Above are five smaller windows with 6 panes, also with eared architraves. The doorcase has a pediment supported by Doric columns, framing a panelled recess and a six-panel door. To either side of the doorway are two windows with Gibbs surrounds and rusticated aprons; the left-hand windows are plain sashes, and the right-hand windows are 20th-century plain sashes. A return gable to the left features two 2-light blocked casements on each floor, with stone flush mullions and projecting surrounds. The second-floor windows are smaller. A rear wing to the right has two similar windows, of 2 and 3 lights, with mullions removed and reglazing with plain sashes. Above these, a smaller 2-light and 3-light window retains its flush mullions. Below, a doorway with a Gibbs surround contains a plain sash. To the right, an unequally hung 30-pane sash is set in a stone surround. The interior includes a stairwell with an enriched modillion cornice featuring fleurons and leafy ceiling bosses. A cantilever stone winder stair has iron stick balusters and a ramped scrolled handrail. The first-floor landing features four moulded and enriched doorcases with broken pediments and fielded six-panel doors in panelled recesses. The ground-floor hall has five similar doorcases. The ground-floor room on the right front features a moulded cornice, a span beam, an elliptical-arched alcove, and a wooden fireplace with an eared surround, cornice, and lattice frieze.
