Description
39 West Gate is a house that has been converted into a shop, dating from around 1820, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared stone, with the front rendered and painted, featuring ashlar dressings. It has a gabled and hipped slate roof, complemented by a brick stack on the side wall. The front displays quoins and a gutter supported by brackets. The structure is two storeys high and has a two-window range of 12-pane sash windows with projecting surrounds. The full-width shopfront and fascia were added in the late 20th century. On the left side, facing Union Street, there is a central 12-pane sash window with a projecting surround, and below it is a round-arched stone doorcase that contains a fielded six-panel door and a fanlight.
