Description

A farmhouse dating from the mid to late 17th century, constructed of rubble stone with stone tiled roofs, moulded coping, and ball finials to the gables. The building is arranged in an 'L' shape. The original range features a prominent north gable with flush quoins and renewed stone-mullion windows with hoodmoulds and relieving arches above. These windows include a two-light attic window, a three-light first-floor window, and a four-light ground-floor window. An additional two-light upper window is present on the east side. A projecting, gabled stair tower is located on the north front, bearing a blocked arched doorway and an oval light above. On the east side of the tower is a four-light mullion and transom window, with the lower lights renewed, under a hoodmould, and a single light within the gable. A large stack is corbelled out at first-floor level on the west side, and two renewed two-light mullion windows are also visible. The rear range incorporates a large outside stack at the east end and a smaller stack at the west end. The north front displays a two-window range of renewed mullion windows, with a three-light window above and a two-light window with a hood and a 20th-century Tudor arched doorway below. A two-light window is located to the left of the chimney in the east end wall. The south front has two hipped dormers, three ovolo-moulded first-floor windows, and, on the ground floor, a three-light window with hoodmould, a two-light window with hoodmould, a single light, a two-light window, and a three-light window. Some original window surrounds remain, while others have been renewed. A series of outbuildings extends southward, beginning with a section featuring a half-hipped south gable and a stack. It has a doorway with a hood on brackets and a three-light window to the east side. A lower range follows, incorporating a four-bay open timber loggia, former stores and stables, and a taller building with half-hipped gables, now used as a garage. Internally, the farmhouse has largely been renewed, though retains fireplaces of the late 17th century style. These include Tudor arched fireplaces with stopped mouldings to the rear range and moulded rectangular surrounds to the front range. A blocked Tudor arched doorway exists between the stair tower and the front room. A fireback dated 1680 was discovered beneath the east end fireplace. The property underwent substantial restoration in 1938.
