Description
Batchelor's Mead is a house with its gable end facing the road, dating from the 14th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of brick and features a thatched roof. The building is two storeys high and consists of four bays. The three-bay medieval house has a bay that was rebuilt in the 19th century as a schoolroom, while a fourth bay was added in the 20th century at the opposite end. The entrance is located in a 20th-century lean-to on the west side, leading to the rear bay of the early house. The windows include timber paned casements and a three-light transomed gable window with diamond panes at the former schoolroom.
Inside, there are two full cruck trusses that create a central open bay. These trusses feature half lap dovetailed tie beams and arched braced collars, with an inserted moulding at the center of the collar. The windbraces are now absent, and the single purlins and principals are extended and lapped at the apex, notched for the ridge, classified as Type E. The central bay has a deep chamfered cross beam ceiling with bar stops, and there is a framed fireplace with a timber lintel and moulded jambs. The room behind the stack contains an angled fireplace.
