Description

Tudor Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th to early 17th century. It is timber framed with whitewashed wattle and daub and brick infilling, featuring a brick sill and a thatched roof. The building is single storey with attics and consists of 3½ bays. It has a lobby entry plan with the entrance located in a half bay between the second and third bays, the latter of which has a later 17th-century two-bay rear wing. The framing consists of three panels high with ogee corner braces. The door is boarded and is sheltered by a pent stone-tiled porch. The house has moulded 5-light canted oriel windows supported on single carved brackets, with tiled roofs and small diamond glazing. There are 3-light windows in the end bay and gable, with upper windows in bays 2 and 3 set within raised gables. The rear features two flush dormers, and the thatch is peaked at the gables with a central brick stack. The rear wing, which is a lean-to, is boarded and has a Bridgewater tiled roof.

Inside, there is a later stair in the lobby. The original parlour in bay 3 has moulded cross ceiling beams and a chalkstone fireplace with a timber fire beam, along with a smoking chamber centrally located at the rear. The original hall in bay 2 features a similar fireplace with a side oven, and a third bread oven in the same stack opens off the entrance lobby. There is a smaller fireplace in the chamber above the parlour, which is now divided to provide access to the rear wing. The central half-bay is windbraced, while the rear wing has chamfered cross beams with pyramid bar stops and a carved circular motif at the intersection.
