Description
Nos 15 and 17 Guilder Lane are originally one house dating back to the late 14th century, with a late 17th-century extension to the south and alterations and a new front in the 19th century. The building is timber framed and has a rough cast and rendered front. It features a gable end roof covered in old tiles, with a later hipped section to the south end, and boxed eaves. Two gabled projections are visible to the rear. A band runs between the storeys at the front of No 15. There are six two-light 19th-century casement windows on the first floor. No 15 has a flush-framed sash window and a door within an architrave surround on the ground floor. No 17 has three later 19th-century sash windows and a plain door on its ground floor. The interior of No 17 shows evidence of an open hall and solar to the north, largely within No 15. Features include chamfered beams, hammerhead wall posts, and the remains of an original stone rubble base beneath the staircase. On the first floor, there is evidence of heavy wallplates, part of a wall post, and the lower portion of what appear to be beams. In the attic, one truss and a bay of roof are exposed, with principals supported by a crown post with angled braces, and scissor braces and curved wind braces to the side purlins. This truss appears to be the original gable end before the southern extension was added. A considerable amount of the original timber framing remains concealed. Some wattle and daub partition walls are still present.
