Description

The Court House is a detached house dating from around 1600 to the mid-18th century. It is composed of a timber-framed wing at the rear and a brick front range constructed in Flemish bond. The roof is tiled with brick stacks, and the building is arranged in an "L" shape.

The symmetrical front facade is two storeys high with an attic, and features five windows. The central doorway has a rectangular light above it, set within a moulded case topped with a segmental hood. Cast iron casements are located to the left and right of the door, and above them on the first floor. Two hipped dormers are visible in the roof. A one-bay extension to the right mirrors the window arrangement with a cast-iron casement to both the ground and first floors. A single-story outshut with 20th-century casements adjoins the rear to the right.

The two-storey timber-framed wing at the rear left has square panelling on a brick plinth, with rendered brick infill and cast iron casement windows similar to those on the front.

The interior was not accessible for inspection in July 1984, but records of the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (England) indicate the presence of chamfered beams with ogee stops on the ground floor, and a mid-18th century newel staircase with flat balusters. The timber-framed wing is thought to be the remnant of a larger structure that was reduced in size when the mid-18th century front range was added.
