Description
Melrose House is a mid-17th century house located on Figheldean High Street. It features a timber frame with brick and flint banded noggings, and the gables are stone quoined, with dispersed stone and flint. The roof is thatched and the house has two storeys with two bays, including a central half bay that contains the entrance. The parlour is on the south side and the living room is on the north, with a timber framed single bay rear extension. The entrance has a central panelled door framed in stone, topped by a thatched canopy supported by brackets. There are canted paned bay windows on either side and 17th century oriel windows above, each supported by single carved brackets and topped with pent tiled roofs, along with a tall timber framed gable. The barge boards feature carved pendants. A date of 1666 is inscribed over the porch. The house has 17th century brick stacks and various tile hung extensions added to the rear around 1920. The interior has not been seen, but it includes large open fireplaces at both gable ends with timber lintels, an oven at the northern end, and a secondary stair in the corner of the parlour.
