Description
Stable Cottage is a house that has been converted into two cottages. It dates from the 15th to 16th centuries, with some parts from the mid-17th century. The building is timber framed and rendered, topped with a thatched roof. It is a single storey with an attic and may have originally had a lobby entry plan, featuring a major parlour and a chamber above in the northern section, known as No 296. The north end has a half-glazed door and various timber windows. The large framed gable for the chamber has carved ends to the plates and a carved pendant. There is a brick stack and a rear extension with an L-shape. The southern section, referred to as Stable Cottage, was likely a late medieval two-bay building positioned at right angles to the road, which was extended to the rear in the 17th century by an additional two bays. Inside Stable Cottage, there is a central cruck truss with purlins and wind braces in the rear bay.
