Description

The Brewhouse with stables to Norton Bavant House is a cottage with a stable block located in Norton Bavant Village, dating from the mid-17th century. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick with stone quoins and features a hipped tiled roof with brick stacks. The building is arranged in an L-plan and is two stories tall with five windows. The central entrance consists of a planked door set in a chamfered stone case, flanked by one hollow-chamfered cross window and one tall casement window with a transom. A moulded string course runs at lintel level. On the first floor, there are three 2-light hollow-chamfered mullioned casements and one 1-light hollow-chamfered casement on either side, all retaining their leaded lights. The left side of the building has a cross window and a 20th-century casement on the first floor. The rear features a late 17th-century outshut with 20th-century doors and casements. The right side has two bull's eye windows on the first floor and external brick stacks. The two-story stable block at the rear has a cross window on either side of a wide stable door, with a string course at the first floor level; there are also two 2-light hollow-chamfered mullioned casements on either side of an inserted loft door. Attached to the left of the stable is an 18th-century carriage house that has two elliptical-arched openings with keystones and imposts, now fitted with 20th-century garage doors, and a single Roman tiled roof. The interior of the stables features a herringbone tiled floor and cast iron and wooden loose boxes, while the interior of the cottage has not been inspected.
