Description
The Old Carriage House at Norton Bavant House is a detached cottage dating from the mid-17th century, located across the yard from The Brewhouse and stables. It is constructed of chequered dressed limestone with rubblestone and features a tiled hipped roof. The building is two stories high with five windows, all of which are casements. The central door, dating from the 20th century, is set in a chamfered stone case, with two hollow-chamfered cross windows on either side. A moulded string course runs along the first floor, which has five 2-light recessed hollow-chamfered mullioned casements. The left side of the building has a 1-light recessed hollow-chamfered casement on the first floor. The rear has been rebuilt and includes a 20th-century central door, flanked by 20th-century 4-light casements, with five 2-light casements on the first floor. Attached to the left side is a former ice house, which features a wide chamfered stone doorway and a planked door accessed by six stone steps within a gabled brick porch. The interior of the ice house has a segmental brick vaulted ceiling. The interior of the carriage house itself was entirely altered in the 1970s.
