Description
Bay Stalls are outfield cattle stalls that were formerly part of Common Farm, built around 1840. The structure consists of nine bays made of local buff brick, topped with a stone slate roof. It has an open front facing west and features a south gable with a 20th-century opening. Inside, there are principal rafter trusses supported by a tie and a single purlin. The stall divisions are made with slotted vertical timbers, allowing for two animals per stall. The tiles are torched, and there is a paved external forecourt with a stream on the opposite side. This building is a well-maintained example of an outfield farm building that has become less common, originally erected on newly cleared land, which was once typical in the north Wiltshire countryside.
