Description
Northview Hospital (North Block) is a former workhouse, now functioning as a hospital, with a commemorative plaque above the central door that reads 'Cricklade and Wootton Bassett Union: 1837'. The building is constructed of fine red brick with white joints and features a hipped low-pitched slate roof without any stacks. The facade facing the street is a formal design with two storeys and single set-back wings that have gable slated roofs. It consists of a 3-4-3 bay arrangement with a broad pediment over the central four bays, a plain stone string course, a single brick eaves course, and a stone cornice and pediment course. All windows are original sashes with glazing bars, set under fine rubbed brick flat arches and stooled stone sills. The central entrance has a wide six-panel door accessed by two stone steps, topped with a heavy flat hood mould supported by simple brackets. Above the door is the incised commemorative plaque, while the pediment remains plain. The interior has been significantly altered, but some original brick vaulting can still be seen in the cross corridors. This building is a notable example of low-cost 19th-century public enterprise, presenting an attractive facade to the village street.
