Description
Castle Combe Primary School, dated 1826, is a school building constructed from rubble stone with a stone tiled roof and paired diagonal stacks at the north end. It is one-and-a-half storeys tall and designed in a 16th-century style. The building features a three-window range with mullion and transom windows. There are three prominent front gables, two of which contain three-light windows for the upper schoolroom, while one has a two-light window. On the ground floor, there are two four-light windows for the lower schoolroom, and a timber porch sits on a stone base, topped with a stone tiled roof and accompanied by a three-light window to the right. The windows are adorned with relieving arches. The south end wall includes a three-light window above and a four-light window below. At the rear, there is a small two-storey wing with end wall stacks, which was previously the schoolteacher's house. This school is an early example of a correctly designed village school of unusual size, located at the east corner of the village. Attached to the southeast corner are ashlar gatepiers with caps, pyramid tops, and a ball, leading to the Manor House Estate, with a wicket gate to the left, marking a later 19th-century entry to the estate.
