Description

26 Westmead Lane is a cottage that was formerly the rear wing of Westmead House. It dates from the early to mid-18th century and was restored around 1990. The building is constructed of rendered limestone rubble with a painted ashlar rear wing and features a steep-pitched 20th-century pantile roof with stacks on the left side. It has a rhomboid two-unit plan with a rear wing.

The exterior is two storeys high with an attic and has a two-window range. The rear wing likely served as a former service outshut. On the first floor, there are roll-moulded raised surrounds to 19th-century two-light casement windows at eaves level. The ground floor features 20th-century windows and a door to the left. The rear of the building has a gabled roof on one half and a pent roof on the other, with various windows.

Inside, a chamfered axial beam spans the entire building. The left-hand room has a stone-flagged floor and a late 19th-century cast-iron kitchen range. In the rear left-hand room, which is part of the former service outshut, there is a well beneath plate glass in the centre. Beneath the rear right room is a barrel-vaulted cellar with a stone floor and steps. The first floor has some exposed timber studding, and the attic features a three-bay collar-beam roof with two rows of heavy tenoned purlins and a notched ridge.
