Description

Rose Cottage and the adjoining cottage are a row of four estate cottages, now functioning as two, built in the early 19th century and extended around 1850 to 1860 for the Neeld estate. They are constructed from coursed rubble stone and topped with stone slate roofs, featuring two ashlar stacks on the main ridge. The building stands two storeys high, with the original central section comprising a three-window range that includes sashes set in ashlar surrounds, with 9-pane windows above and 12-pane windows on the ground floor on each side. The ground floor center features a shallow canted bay with a 4:16:4-pane window, closely flanked by doors in flush ashlar surrounds that have hoods supported by brackets. At each end, the wings added around 1850 to 1860 project outward, showcasing barge boarded gables, shield plaques, and cast-iron lattice glazed casements with hoodmoulds—two-light above and three-light below. The side walls originally had open ashlar porches with barge boards, chamfered piers, and depressed arches; the west side porch remains, while the east side has been altered with a hood on brackets replacing the original porch.
