Pinhills Farmhouse

Pinhills Farmhouse is a farmhouse from the mid 18th century, possibly built on a core from the late 17th century. It is constructed of rubble stone and features a 19th-century Bridgwater tile roof with eaves and barge boards. The building is two storeys high with an attic and is designed in an L-shape with cross gables. It has ashlar stacks on the gables and at the south end of the rear wing.

The north front has three windows, with a gable at each side, raised quoins, and windows set in raised architraves with block rusticated jambs. The first floor has a two-light window in the centre, while the ground and first floors on each side have three-light windows. The gables are blank. The ground floor features an ashlar centerpiece with a door set in a raised block rusticated architrave topped with a pediment, flanked by casement windows with a cornice above. The door is a six-panel design.

The west end wall has a similar three-light window on each floor and a 19th-century gabled dormer. The east end and rear wing have plain flush mullion two-light windows and 19th-century dormers. Inside, there is one fielded panelled room on the ground floor to the right.

Historically, Pinhills was a manor held by the Blake family from the 13th to the 18th century. The great house that once stood within the moat next to the current farmhouse was destroyed by Royalists in 1644. The present farmhouse is noted for being the site where the first vaccination, often attributed to Edward Jenner, was actually carried out by J. Ingenhousz, a distinguished scientist who lived at Bowood House at the time.
