Vernleaze And Attached Service Range And Garden Wall

Vernleaze and the attached service range and garden wall is a house dating from the early 19th century, with an extension added around 1840. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and features lateral stacks and a slate hipped roof, showcasing a Greek Revival style. The building has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with a four-window range. The entrance front includes clasping pilaster strips, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. On the left side, there is a projecting wing, while the right side has a three-window section with an open stone three-bay loggia supported by paired fluted Ionic columns. The left entrance is covered by a mid-20th century glazed porch. The wing features a ground-floor blind doorway with an eared and battered architrave, paired flanking pilasters, and a ground-floor cornice. The windows are plain and consist of 12/9-pane sashes. The right-hand three-window return has outer blocked windows beneath the lateral stacks, and there is a lower mid-19th century coursed rubble range set back, with a lower rendered southwest front. The garden front boasts a wide full-height bow.

Inside, the entrance hall is marble-flagged and divided by a distyle in antis flat arch of fluted Ionic columns, leading to a well-lit stone open-well staircase with stick balusters, moulded newels, and a curtail. Additional interior details include cornices, panelled shutters, six-panel doors, and stone fire surrounds with reeded sides and tops, along with corner roundels. The property also features an attached brick stable range to the west, which includes a ridge dovecote, and a northwest garden retaining wall that encloses the rear garden.
