Description

Syrencot House is a house, now used as offices, built in 1738. It features red and blue brickwork with a limestone plat band and raised quoins, topped with a slate roof. The main block is three storeys high with five bays across and was extended to the right in the early 19th century with a two-storey, three-bay addition, along with a wing at the rear. The entrance to the wing is located at the junction with the main block, sheltered by a curved Tuscan portico. The main block has 12-paned sash windows with segmental heads set in red brick flush quoined openings, featuring arches with raised keystones and moulded stone sills. There is a round arched opening for the central first-floor window, which has a raised surround. The top floor has six-paned sashes, and the building is adorned with dentilled stone eaves, as well as cogged eaves at the ends and rear. The right wing has margin glazed windows and a hipped roof.

Inside, the house has been mostly altered, but the south end retains fielded dado panelling and a cornice. The wing features an early 19th-century staircase. Syrencot House served as a military residence for Lieutenant General Browning, General Sir Richard Gale, and Lord Allenbrooke, playing a significant role in the founding of the airborne divisions and the planning and execution of Operation Overlord.
