Description
This is a house, now divided into two dwellings, built in 1631. It is timber-framed with brick noggings, some wattle and daub to the first floor, and has a thatched roof. The house is two storeys high with attics, and a cellar is situated under the south end. It has an āLā shape, comprising a north-south main range that follows the slope of the land, with two bays and a central half bay containing a stack, alongside a contemporary wing on the west side of the north bay, which is one bay wide. The timber framing has been restored. The ground floor framing consists of two panels high, with one panel to the first floor. The house is jettied on all sides, with shaped joist ends and shaped brackets beneath the wall plate extensions. A door is located in the re-entrant angle, leading to No. 295, and a half-glazed door has been inserted into the restored gable end of the wing, serving No. 294. Paned timber windows are present. The roof features double purlins, with half-hipped gables. A rebuilt three-flue brick stack is visible, along with an additional brick stack on the north side of the wing. Inside, the parlour at the south end and the living room in the wing have deep chamfered spine beams with ogee stops. Straight wind braces are visible on the purlins and rafters, which are pegged. The original fireplaces have been blocked, and later stairs have been added. No. 295 retains 17th-century panelling on two walls within the south parlour.
