Description
The Sluice House and Eel Trap, located north of Manor Ditch in Britford, is an eel trap and sluice house dating from the early 19th century, with partial rebuilding in the mid-19th century and later alterations in the 19th century. It is constructed of red brick in English and Flemish bond, along with weatherboarding, and features clay plain tile roofs with gabled and hipped ends.
The structure has a long, narrow range that spans a cut in the River Avon, housing sluices and eel traps. At the south end, it forms an overall L-shaped plan with the sluice house positioned at right angles. The exterior is single-storey, with the sluice range supported by six stone piers. The downstream east side is built in English bond brick and has small square openings beneath the eaves, while the upstream west side is weatherboarded and features a row of plank doors, with brick walls on either side. The sluice house on the south bank has a taller hipped roof.
Inside, the sluice range retains its roof structure, which includes tie-beams and common-rafter coupes. The sluice house contains machinery for operating the sluices, including cast-iron gearing.
