Description

The main block of Abbey Mills, formerly known as India Rubber Mills, is an imposing late 19th-century factory built in 1875 by Richard Gane. The roughly square building is constructed of ashlar and has hipped slate roofs. The principal south-facing elevation features eight bays, each containing a window with a pointed segmental head, glazing bars, and a swivel-hung transom light. These windows are set within shallow vertical recesses that extend upwards through all five floors, culminating in lancet-arched heads. A continuous corbel table supports a moulded cornice and a plain parapet with moulded coping. A brick smoke stack with a polygonal upper section is built upon a square ashlar base. The building forms a group with other listed buildings on Church Street, including the Chantry Little Chantry, Barton Orchard, the Catholic Church of St Thomas More, and various other properties and a wall on Newtown.
