Description

Abbey House, the annexe to the rear of Abbey House, dates from the late 18th century, with a 16th-century annexe. The main building is constructed of ashlar stone and has a modern pantile roof. It is square in plan, three storeys high, and features five windows on the front elevation. The central portion of the building slightly projects forward and has a dentilled pediment above it. There is a plain string course at the first-floor level, a moulded and dentilled cornice, and a plain parapet. All windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars. The ground floor windows have plain reveals, while the first-floor windows have architrave surrounds and flat, moulded cornices with cut stone brackets beneath the sills. The two windows in the central portion have pediments, and the second-floor windows also have architrave surrounds. The entrance features a semi-circular-headed doorway with a keystone and imposts, along with a fanlight that has glazing bars. The stone doorcase includes Tuscan three-quarter columns on plinths, an entablature, and a pediment, with a plinth course surrounding the building and four steps leading up to the door.

The 16th-century annexe is located to the right and at the rear of the main building. It is oblong in plan, has a stone-tiled roof, and is two storeys high with some stone-mullioned windows. The exterior has been considerably restored. Inside, the annexe features original oak-timbered ceilings with moulded beams and close rafters, several doorways with 4-centred arches and chamfered mouldings, and four open stone fireplaces with flattened pointed arches.

Abbey House and its annexe are part of a group of listed buildings on Church Street, which includes the Chantry, Little Chantry, Barton Orchard, and the Catholic Church of St Thomas More on Market Street, along with several other properties on Barton Orchard and Newtown.
