Description

The Poplars is an early 19th-century building that was originally a brush factory, and is now a house. It is constructed primarily of flint, with brick dressings and lacings, and some chalk block to the rear. The roof is slate. The building is three storeys high and has three bays. The central bay features a pair of half-glazed doors, above which are recessed panels with a timber lintel containing a window. All windows are 20th century, with timber frames. Those on the ground and first floors have painted stone or rendered wedge lintels with key blocks and cambered soffits. A stack is located on the right gable. A 20th-century lean-to to the right contains the recessed main entrance. A deep two-storey recess is present to the right gable with paned windows, and a late 19th-century two-bay, two-storey rear wing extends at right angles, with a later lean-to on the roadside. The building likely began as a water mill. A partly timber-framed, earlier mill house, known as Riverside, is attached to the rear, but has been altered and is not considered of special interest.
