Description
Daye House is a mid-19th century dairy house or cottage designed by architects Wyatt and Brandon, showcasing an Italianate style. The building stands two storeys tall, constructed of ashlar stone on a plinth, and features a heavy slate roof supported by slate over-rafters. The south front has a gabled break to the left, with projecting eaves that have shaped rafter ends. There are four tall grooved ashlar chimneys on the ridges, each with stop-chamfered sides and coved capping.
The windows are framed with raised surrounds and have blocks at the sills. The left gable includes paired round-headed lights on the first floor and two round-headed keyed arches on the ground floor, which have been converted into windows with casements. The right wing has two outer first-floor windows and a pair of inner ground-floor windows flanked by doors, although the right-hand door is blocked.
In front, there is a colonnade supported by three and a half stone piers aligned with the gabled break. The east side features a gabled break to the left and connects to a two-storey wing via a square belvedere corner turret topped with a pepperpot cap. The belvedere has round-headed windows with balustraded panels below on the first floor and a monogrammed panel below, marked with "PMA". The wing is a later adaptation of the original dairy, which may have been associated with either the Countess Pembroke or Lady Herbert of Lea, and features a two-storey angled bay to the north. The original dairy was polygonal in shape, with tiled walls and a central milk fountain.
