Description
Image Bridge, built in 1822, spans the River Wylye and was designed by architect Sir Richard Westmacott, with construction by a builder named Fisher. The bridge features a stone-faced structure, with ashlar stonework below and a vermiculated parapet along with side piers. It is particularly notable for two large marble statues, likely created by Sir Richard, which are positioned on a ledge that is backed by the parapet, which is lower than the statues. These statues are believed to represent Ceres on the left and Bacchus on the right. The bridge consists of three segmental arches, with the central arch being taller and wider than the others. It has pointed breakwaters and side piers that include slits with rustic voussoirs. There is a projecting band below the parapet, and pedestals for the statues flank the central arch. The east side of the bridge is finished in plain ashlar.
