Description
The barn south of West Dean Farmhouse dates from around 1700. It is timber framed with brick walls in the aisles, a tiled roof, and slate over the aisles. The structure has ten bays, with midstreys in bays 3 and 8, a contemporary aisle on the south side, and a lean-to aisle added on the north. There is a two-bay wing on the north side above bays 5 and 6, which is dated 1808 and attributed to Wm Brook. The north aisle has been infilled with concrete blocks, and the west gable is covered with weatherboarding. The roof is hipped over the midstreys and half hipped at the ends. Inside, the barn features tie beam trusses with straight braces to jowled posts, raking queen struts to collars, and two tiers of tenoned purlins.
